Mission & Objectives

Independence Empowerment Center, Inc. (IEC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit Center for Independent Living. All people with disabilities who live in Prince William and Fauquier Counties and the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park are eligible for IEC services and is one of over 500 Centers in the United States with roots in civil rights models of the 1960s.

Independence Empowerment Center (IEC) is a Center for Independent Living as defined by the U.S. Department of Education. IEC provides services enabling adults and children with disabilities to improve the quality of their lives, determine their own lifestyle, participate in all aspects of society, and secure their human and civil rights. IEC also provides a means for consumer control and policy direction of the service delivery systems affecting people with disabilities.

The Mission of IEC is to encourage, support and provide options to people with disabilities. Our Vision is to assist people with disabilities:

  • Access appropriate community services
  • Exercise their civil rights
  • Participate in all aspects of society
  • Advocate their value to society

Independence Empowerment Center is:

  • Community-based
  • non-profit
  • non residential
  • service and advocacy organization
  • operated for people with disabilities and by people with disabilities

IEC is organized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization governed by its members and a member-elected Board of Directors. Individuals on the Board serve three-year terms and (by directive) at least one-half of the Board must be comprised of people with disabilities.
